Persuasive Speech - Why It Is Important For Children To Engage With The News

During Term Two we had been learning how to write and present a speech. Once we had written our speech, we had to present it in front of an audience, our classmates. While I was writing my speech I faced a challenge coming up with 3 different ideas I could make into paragraphs, I also think I did well at using a variety of sentences. When I was presenting my speech I think I did well at making eye contact with the audience. A few of my classmates peer-assessed me while I was presenting my speech, their feedback was that I had a clear voice and I was confident.

Statistical Investigation

WALT: Carry out a statistical investigation.
For my maths investigation, I decided to ask Ruma J to estimate how many teddy bears were in the box. There were 29. 4 people guess that there were more than 35 teddy bears and 20 - 24 teddy bears. The least amount of estimates were in the 25-29 range, with only 3. I found it interesting that out of 16 people only 1 person guessed the right amount. The majority of people guessed in the 30-34 range. I would like to do another investigation on how many there are of each colour.

Forces - Hurricanes

They form over warm oceans of at least 30° C. The water evaporates easily and rises quickly as water vapour as a result of the warm waters. As the water vapour hits the cooler air it forms into water droplets of rain in storm clouds.  When the heat moves quick it creates a spinning pattern around the center of the storm clouds which becomes the eye. Stronger winds move it across the sea where it expands its width and become a bigger threat by gathering more warm moist air.  This also increases the speed and sucking power. Once the wind speed reaches 120 km per hour  it is called a hurricane and given a name so it is easy to identify.

Inertia Forces

What is Inertia?

Inertia is the first law of motion. It is when an object wants to continue what it is already doing. But if an obstacle is put in its way it will resist stopping. An example is a car, if the car suddenly stops moving(brake) the people in the car still want to move but a seat belt will act as an obstacle by stopping you from moving. Also when a stone is kicked it take force to kick it because it doesn't want to stop want its doing, but if it faces an obstacle such as air friction, rough ground or a physical obstacle then it will resist stopping, but eventually stop.

Magic Steel Ad Reflection

For the past few weeks we have been making an ad. We decided to make an ad about a stapler, Magic Steel! I think we worked well as a team, by sharing the editing, acting and planning. A complication we faced was the filming, because when we filmed a scene the first and last few seconds of the recording got cut out, so it took a bit longer than we expecting to film all the scenes. We planned well so we had a clear view of what we were doing, which was really helpful. If we did this again then I would prefer to have the camera at a higher level, because I found the angle a bit weird. Overall I think we did a good job at advertising our product and we also had fun making it.

Balance and Unbalanced Forces

What is a Balanced Force?

Balanced Force is when two forces acting on opposite sides of an object are equal in newtons. It causes the object to remain still.

What is a Unbalanced Force?

A unbalanced force is the opposite of a balanced force. An object with unbalanced force moves in the opposite direction to the side that has more force applied.

Homelinks Week 6

This week for homelinks I decided to write a reflection on the netball tournament that we went to on Tuesday.
On Tuesday our class (Ruma J) participated in a school netball tournament in Greymouth. The weather was quite nice, not too windy or rainy but the courts were a bit wet.We were all very excited to play because we had been training and many of us had not played netball before. The first game we played was against a Grey Main school team. We didn’t play too well in our first game but after that we played really good. As the day went on we got better. I think our best game was probably one of our last few games. Overall it was really a enjoyable day for everyone. We all played really good, as a team and individually.

Homelinks Week 5

This week for homelinks I decided to do a quick write. Here is my story that I wrote with the sentence starter: "I thought you accidentally sliced your hand open."
"I did."
"Then why aren't you bleeding... at all?"

“I thought you said you accidentally sliced your hand open.”
“I did.”
“Then why aren’t you bleeding… at all?” A daunting expression comes across my friend’s face as she realised the truth.
I thought I could trust her, but I guess I was wrong. My mother always said “no one could be trusted” I never believed her but now I wish I had.
From that day forward no one spoke directly to me. I guess she spread my secret… I can’t believe I trusted her. The pain of betrayal is more severe than I ever imagined. It hurt more than any wound ever would. I feel like I’ve been torn apart in every way possible, inside and out.
I need to get away from here, away from them and all the pain; where can I go? This is the only place I have ever called home, I don’t think it even classifies as a home but to me it’s all I could ever ask for and more. I have no clue as to how i’m going to leave…
As I pack my belongings, too many memories crash in my brain and i’m left in a mess on the floor. I stay like this for what seems like hours, but is only minutes, as I try to sort my emotions out. They remain unsorted, I remain a mess and the pain is worse than before. I remember who I was before and who I am now. I remember my mother finding me. I remember my ‘Dad’, I remember all the good times. I remember the bad. The tears don’t stop flowing.

I hear a knock at the door and in steps my Mum. I dry my tears with the closest thing I can find, a blanket that was once loved and cared for but is now left lying around. I steady myself enough to stand up and walk over to the door, I reach around to hug her but she disappears.
